Here's a sample score of the 4 Quartertone Studies. It is nominally for flute, but is written such that it can be played on any treble-clef instrument.
It starts by slowly building up intonation stability through use of octave-reduced intervals derived from the harmonic series into simple compound intervals (3rds) and the neutral 2nd.
The piece should be played with a drone on I, II, and III as indicated, and then fully solo for IV.
The ornamentations are provided as a suggestion for how the piece should be ornamented. I love the individuality ornaments bring out! Feel free to play your own instead.
Please feel free to download this .pdf and play the piece on your own to help you intonate the more difficult 11- and 13-identity harmonies of 24edo!
Special huge thanks to Meg Griffith for premiering the piece and providing such a great recording of this piece!
